24 hectares of Can Burguès estate are devoted to hazelnut crops (coryllus avellana), in different fields, with trees of different ages and varieties.
Some hazelnut trees are more than 50 years old, while others have been planted quite recently.
Approximately half of the trees are of the negret variety. This is the most appreciated variety to be toasted and used as an appetizer or as a desert because of its excellent taste.
We have other varieties to help pollination, most of them being traditional or native ones.
As we want to be respectful with the environment, we have recently changed to an eco-friendly growing system, also known as biological or organic, with the aim of getting healthy natural products with the best quality and with a very good taste.
Eco-friendly agriculture doesn't use synthetic chemical products such as hormones, pesticides or minerals fertilizers. Therefore, we do not damage the fauna and we do not fall into unnecessary risks to human health, as we do not generate chemical waste that can build up into the soil and into the fruits.
Ecological agriculture doesn't work with genetically modified organisms (transgenic).
After a three-year long process, in 2007 we have been granted the ecological certificate from the Generalitat (Catalan Government). From that date on, our hazelnut is ecological to all effects.
